The Norwegian College of Elite Sport

PRESENTATION

The Norwegian College of Elite Sport (Norges Toppidrettsgymnas/NTG) is a non-profit private foundation, which owns six schools organized as non-profit Ltd's. NTG was founded in 1981 and started with only 12 pupils.

Today NTG has a total number of 870 students at six schools. These are located in Bærum (near Oslo), Kongsvinger (close to the swedish border), Tromsø in the north and two schools are situated in the mountain resorts of Geilo and Lillehammer for the benefit of winter sports. The school is funded by a combination of state grants, school fees, and sponsor revenue.

The school offers its students a rigorous, carefully planned and individually adapted training schedule each year, combined with a three-year course of upper secondary education. NTG has the athlete at the centre of attention.

The NTG Foundation also established a lower secondary school in 2004 based on the same principles as for the initial students of upper secondary education. The younger students belong to a department called NTG-U, which is associated with the upper secondary school in Bærum. NTG-U offers preparatory basic sports training for 180 pupils.

NTG’S MAIN OBJECTIVE

NTG supports the athletes sports career and promotes their academic education. During their career the students should be capable of winning medals in international championships, qualifying for university and academic education and developing excellent ethical principles.

INTERNATIONAL RESULTS 1981-2009

In sporting terms NTG is an outstanding success. Former and present students regularly achieve excellent international sports results. Each year national teams recruit athletes from the school. Former students have won World Championships, Olympic medals and World Cup victories.

THE SECRET BEHIND THE SUCCESS

High-level quantitative and qualitative training
A very high amount of training is a key factor to enable the students to reach a high international level. NTG has up to 25 hours of organized training per week, and up to 60 days of trainingcamps and competitions during one school year. Throughout the day, periods are divided between training and teaching; even when students are away on trainingcamps, they receive a minimum of three hours teaching each day.

Flexibility
The teaching is flexibly organized, and timetables vary throughout the school year in accordance with different periodical plans, principal competitions and championships of each individual sport.

Competitions and trainingcamps throughout Europe, Africa, Asia and the US
Trainingcamps for each sport are planned with the season’s main objective in mind. To be able to reach a high international level, competitions and trainingcamps are held in Norway and abroad. Top level athletes from abroad are also invited to NTG in order to further the level of intensity and quality in training.

Highly qualified coaches
NTG employs 79 coaches on a high international level from 9 different nations. This ensures a high level of competence and an interdisciplinary development in the coaching staff.

Elite athletes
The students are admitted after a careful screening of both their sports achievements and their grades from secondary school. Since so many of the best junior athletes in the country attend the school, the students inspire each other to compete and perform.

Individual coaching and backing
Each student has an individually adapted trainingprogram and is followed up socially, mentally and educationally by the school’s staff.

National and international expertise
NTG uses interdisciplinary competence extensively. External expertise includes World- and Olympic Champions, national team coaches, lecturers from private companies and the Norwegian Olympic Committee and Confederation of Sport.

ELITE SPORT AND UNIVERSITY QUALIFYING EDUCATION

NTG offers an upper secondary education in the general area of study. The successfully completed course and final examinations satisfy the general requirements for admission to universities and other academic institutions at university level. The college is open to students from all over Norway. Foreign students are welcome to apply, but must meet the requirements of the school and Norwegian regulations for foreigners’ stay in the country. All teaching is in Norwegian.

THE NORWEGIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE’S STATEMENT ON NTG

«The Norwegian College of EliteSport has over the years been a highly important partner for The Norwegian Olympic Committee, when it comes to developing elite sports in Norway.
The combination of sport and education is especially important. NTG takes excellently care of the first link in the elite sports chain. The athletic program is of superior quality and, despite the extensive training they undergo and all the travelling they do, the students continue to achieve examination results that are well up to and above the national average.»
